ארבע בבוקר, סוף דצמבר, כותב אליך עכשיו, לראות אם אתה בסדר. ניו-יורק קרה, אבל אני אוהב את המקום בו אני גר/ שומעים מוסיקה ברחוב קלינטון כל הערב"… כך פותח לאונרד כהן בקולו הנמוך האפל שיר לחבר שקיים יחסים עם האישה שאיתו.
בראיון לבי.בי.סי ב-1994, אמר לאונרד כהן: "שכחתי באיזה משולש מדובר. האם אני עצמי הייתי מעורב בו. לא זוכר אם מדובר במישהו מסוים, או שהכל פרי דמיוני. הייתה לי תמיד תחושה, שאדם בלתי נראה פיתה את האישה שאיתי. לא הייתי מרוצה מהשיר הזה. תמיד חשתי כי משהו בו אינו בהיר".
הגם שהשיר מושר מנקודת מבט של גבר, הכותב-פונה לגבר אחר, על רקע היחסים ביניהם, זמרות רבות בחרו לשיר אותו, ביניהן ג'ון באאז, טורי איימוס, ג'ניפר וורנס. וורנס, ששימשה זמרת ליווי שלו בתחילת השבעים, הוציאה ב-1987 אלבום שם של שירי לאונרד כהן שנקרא Famous Blue Raincoat.
השיר נכלל באלבומו Songs Of Love And Hate משנת 1971, אלבום האולפן השלישי שלו, המכיל את אחדות מיצירותיו הטובות כיוצר-זמר ביניהן "ג'אן דארק", "האהבה קוראת לך בשמך".
